Whether it's a Mediterranean beach house, a Tuscan villa, or a Manhattan penthouse, the Misczynskis always place a premium on clean lines, classical proportions, and furniture of fine pedigree and sculptural brio. The couple possesses an extraordinary understanding of design history - as well as an intimate acquaintance with the best international resources for decorative arts - and they regularly travel across the globe to locate a perfect chair, a sublime desk, or an otherworldly textile. Another hallmark of the couple's work is their finesse in integrating important artworks and important antiques in a manner that is both sensitive and mutually ennobling - CY Twombly and Jean-Michel Frank, Willem de Kooning and Pierre Chareau, Franz Kline and Alberto & Diego Giacometti.
Of course, great art and furniture are only part of the Misczynskis' alchemy in conjuring superb interiors. The designers are acutely aware of the human aspect of their work, and the homes they create, first and foremost, remain a reflection of the unique spirit of the clients they serve, whether they be families with small, rambunctious children or esteemed collectors with a taste for the rare and fragile.
The Misczynskis' ability to move fluidly between design languages, and to collaborate successfully with architects as diverse as Robert A.M. Stern and John Pawson, is a testament to the couple's professional pedigrees. Michael Misczynski traveled the spectrum of high design while working in the offices of architect Richard Meier and legendary decorator Rose Tarlow. Alexandra Misczynski developed her technical prowess and aesthetic savvy in the ateliers of Naomi Leff in New York and Michael Smith in Los Angeles.
The lessons of their mentors are clearly evident in the sophistication and confidence of Atelier AM's interiors. The fresh, contemporary sensibility that animates the couple's work, however, is purely their own.
